Good Desk

Importance of Good Desk: For many people, the major advantage of working at home is getting to work in your own space. For some, that means good central heating. For others, that might mean getting to work all day in their pyjamas, and I’d be willing to bet that for a fair few people, the biggest benefit to working at home is using their own desk.

Influence of Work space on your Mood and Work

Working in an office, you get what you’re given, and you probably don’t even think twice about your desk. It’s quite literally just a part of the furniture. When it’s your desk, however, you get to tailor it to your needs.

How tall is it? What shape is it? Is it a standing desk, sitting, or both? A good minimalist desk is like a good bed; practical, sturdy, and–perhaps most importantly–comfortable.

Your environment changes your mood, and your mood has a big influence on your work. We all know how hard distractions make it to concentrate, and discomfort can be a form of distraction. Discomfort can also lead to injuries.

When you think of work-related injuries, the odds are you’re not thinking of desk work, but when you’re using the same muscles every day, it doesn’t matter if they’re in your calf or your carpus (wrist). You have to be very careful not strain or damage them.

For the most part, this is all about learning good habits. It’s important not to slump over your work and take regular breaks, but the right kind of desk can significantly influence these things, helping to regulate said habits.

Importance of a Good Desk

First of all, your desk needs to be at a good height with your chair. You need your mouse and keyboard to be in a comfortable position in front of you without having to lean over to keep a good posture constantly. Good posture leads to fewer back problems which, in turn, will lead to better productivity overall.

The next thing you should do is install an under desk wireless charger, which will be very useful in freeing up space from unnecessary wires on your desk and making it look clean because if you don’t have a place for something, it will just end up somewhere on your desk until the entire space is so cluttered that you have to tidy it up once a week to maintain a work balance.

The cure for this is to have well-organized drawers. Decide on all the things you’ll want to have access to while working and split them up into an appropriate number of categories. That should give you a perfect idea of how many desk drawers you’ll need.

If you struggle to keep drawers organized, you could consider labeling them, but you could also consider a desk with clear drawers. Plastic drawers might not look as nice, but it’s easier to remember where things are supposed to go when you can see what’s inside a drawer. That way, you’ll also be more motivated to keep your drawers tidy.

Space required for a Good Desk

Of course, another important thing you’ll have to balance is going to be space. How much space do you have for a desk, and how much space will be used. Do you use a desktop or laptop computer? Do you need to be able to work on paper?

You must measure the space where you plan to put your desk. Know what dimensions you can fit and try to work out what you’ll need. Do you have space to put those speakers on the desk, or will they need wall mounts? Is there room for you to have a double monitor setup?

All of these questions are personal to your needs and your requirements but, as far as I’m concerned, the best space for a desk is the space where you can fit the most desk.

Importance of Workplace

Having a nice place to work matters for various reasons, but the most important of all is mood. It’s hard to stay cheerful when you feel boxed in, like you’re surrounded by clutter and haven’t got space to work. It’s much easier when working in a space you’ve tailored to your personal needs.

At the end of your day, every decision you make about your workspace should be geared towards feeling good while you work. That’s not just because you’re more productive when you’re happy. Although you certainly are, but also because it’s always better to be happy where you can be.

In modern society, we devote a lot of time to work, but the whole point of that work, in the long run, is to improve our lives and make us all happier. If you can, then you might as well have a good time doing it.
